It would be unimaginable to think about the modern world without smartphones. Especially this year, 2020 has seen an unprecedented increase in the reliance and usage of smartphones.

However, there does exist a downside to this reliance. As screen time seems to be increasing, so do the health problems associated with it. Internet Fatigue is one but there’s still an array of afflictions to the mental and physical well-being of a person.

Using smartphones in the night, before one sleeps has especially adverse effects. A lot of studies conducted by various foundations has linked increased smartphone usage to serious health risks.

Using smartphones before going to sleep at night leads to dryness in the eyes and is a major factor is the formation of dark circles. Not only that, it also leads to swelling in and around the area.

It is especially harmful to use it with the phone brightness on a high level as many people do. But most people don’t realise that the light emitted from the phone is a part of the full light spectrum. If it isn’t enough that we are exposed to this light in the day from the sun, the same exposure at night is damaging and can even cause headaches.

Excessive use of phone at night can lead to a burning sensation in the eyes as it has a drying effect on the lacrimal gland of the eyes.

In contrast, the pupil of your eyes may start to shrink and your eyes may start to water. Continuous usage slows down the process of blinking the eyelid. This makes the pupils and veins of the eyes also shrink leading to more headaches.

It is in the best interest of people to shut down their phones at night to make sure you physical and mental well-being is good and to ensure that you will wake up refreshed.
