Overwatch was released in 2016, and ever since then, the team-based shooter has become known for its variety of seasonal events. From Lunar New Year to Winter Wonderland and everything in between, these updates bring new content for fans. Perhaps the biggest highlight of these events is the wide range of seasonal skins introduced. One hero who has garnered a number of outfits over the years from these events is Winston.
Classified as a tank, Winston has several powerful abilities that help support his team. Using his Barrier Projector, he can place a shield to protect himself and his teammates. In addition, Winston can travel large distances using his Jump Pack, allowing him to take vulnerable enemies by surprise. As if these abilities were not enough, he comes equipped with the powerful Primal Rage ultimate. As part of the original cast of characters, Winston has become one of the more iconic heroes in the game. Recently, a team from the Overwatch League came up with a festive albeit unusual skin concept for the character.
In a tweet from December 21, professional Overwatch team New York Excelsior shared an image of Winston. What made this picture of the Tesla Cannon wielding tank interesting was that it featured a never-before-seen Christmas skin. Coined the Grinch who stole Overwatch 2 aka, Grinchston, the new outfit for the character featured the primate in a red and white jacket and Santa hat. In addition, the coloration of his skin had been changed to a greenish shade. Grinchston also carried a large sack on his back with a few copies of the elusive Overwatch 2 sticking out.
Despite NYXL stating in the tweet that the Grinchston skin was available in Winter Wonderland 2021 for Overwatch, it is worth noting that this Winston design appears to only be a concept. It currently does not appear in the game. However, that did not stop fans from commenting on the unique design on social media. Some gamers believed that the skin concept rivaled those included in the Winter Wonderland event. In addition, another fan said that the design tempted them to return to the team-based shooter. “This is how I’d come back to Overwatch,” Twitter user Pistolerros17 remarked.
While it seems unlikely that this skin will come to the game anytime soon, a variety of other Christmas cosmetics were introduced into Overwatch just in time for the holidays. As part of Winter Wonderland 2021, the developers at Activision Blizzard gave a number of heroes a winter makeover. Some of the characters that received a new skin included Lucio, Wrecking Ball, D.Va, and Orisa. However, for those still wanting to play as Grinchston, there is always next Christmas.
Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
