New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on August 9, 2021) follows:

Are you facing issues connecting to Plex? Well, if yes, then find solace in the fact that you are not alone. A lot of users are reporting connection issues with the Plex service.

A quick glance at the social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit reveals it’s a widespread issue. Here are some of the reports from affected users:

As clear from the above reports, Plex is not working properly and is having a hard time handling authentications.

Its app on Nvidia Shield, web, and possibly other platforms is hanging trying to find profiles following which it says that profiles aren’t available at all.

Moreover, its download page is working frustratingly slow and is taking over 30 seconds to open. One can head over to the Plex.tv downloads section on a browser and watch it spin and hang.

Oddly, the Plex mobile apps like on iOS seem to be totally fine indicating that not all platforms have been affected by the authentication and API server problems.

Down detector – a popular service that gives information about live outages – also conveys that Plex is indeed going through a glitch as can be seen in the image below:

While the spike has definitely taken a dip following the initial bunch of reports, new complaints are constantly flowing in, proving that all’s still not well.

Thankfully, the Plex status page shows that the company is aware of the outage and is already working to get it sorted out as soon as possible.

As always, we will continue to keep an eye on the matter and will be updating this article accordingly as new developments arise, so stay tuned.

Update 1 (August 24, 2022)

03:29 pm (IST): Plex servers experienced a significant data breach, potentially exposing the credentials of many users.

Once the company detected the Plex security breach, it began sending emails to users indicating that they should change their passwords so that no one else can access their accounts.

But many are unable to change their password since Plex servers went down right after the breach (1, 2).
