Sony’s PlayStation Now subscription service gives PS4 and PS5 gamers instant access to a ton of games, with new titles added regularly. Recently, Sony announced that big games like Borderlands 3 and Marvel’s Avengers would be coming to PlayStation Now, and since both games allow for free PS5 upgrades, those with Sony’s new console were excited to play the updated versions. However, it’s now been confirmed that’s not possible.

As discovered by Push Square, PlayStation Now subscribers can play both Borderlands 3 and Marvel’s Avengers on PlayStation 5 with no issue, but they can only play the PS4 versions of the games. There is no way to upgrade to the PS5 versions of Borderlands 3 or Marvel’s Avengers while playing them through PlayStation Now, and so anyone interested in doing so will need to actually purchase the games.

At the time of this writing, PlayStation Now consists purely of PS2, PS3, and PS4 games, with no PS5 titles offered at all. Assuming Sony plans to keep hosting the PlayStation Now service, one has to imagine that will change eventually. And maybe when PlayStation Now adds PS5 games, the service will allow for users to play the updated versions of the games instead of only the last-generation versions. However, that’s just speculation at this time, as Sony has not given any indication of when it is going to add PS5 games to PlayStation Now, if it plans on doing so at all.

The new PlayStation Now games for April 2021 show that Sony is serious about adding big games to the service, but the lack of PS5 support is concerning to some. It could be taken as a sign that Sony isn’t interested in continuing PlayStation Now in a serious way on the next-generation platform, but fans shouldn’t worry too much just yet. Sony could just be waiting for the PlayStation 5 generation to get some games and for the PS5 itself to be in more households first.

Sony seems to focus more of its marketing efforts on pushing PlayStation Plus instead of PlayStation Now. The free PS Plus games typically include some heavy hitters, giving fans across both PS4 and PS5 new free titles to play on a monthly basis. This month’s lineup is headlined by Oddworld: Soulstorm on PS5, a brand new release, and Days Gone on PlayStation 4.

Maybe Sony will continue focusing on PlayStation Plus instead of PlayStation Now, but with growing competition from Xbox Game Pass, that may not be the best move. Whatever the case may be, PlayStation gamers can still look forward to new titles coming to PlayStation Now regularly, even if PS5 games aren’t included just yet.
