A couple of issues have become so widespread in the Android world that it’s getting ridiculous. Firstly we got the awfully tinted AMOLED displays from which there’s still no respite, even with newly released phones.
And then there are the random devices with their downgraded Widevine certifications following recent updates, especially OTAs related to Android 11.
For the uninitiated, such Widevine downgrades are mostly from the tip-top L1 level to the substandard L3 level. When this happens, the affected device is unable to play DRM-protected content in HD resolution.
Instead, the maximum supported resolution on streaming apps falls to 540p or 480p, which is definitely no good for today’s phones with their glorious 1080p+ resolutions and over 6.5″ display sizes.
There have been reports of the Widevine downgrade issues from several Chinese OEMs including Xiaomi and even devices like the Google Pixel.
Oppo appears to be the latest contender in this cursed feud. We previously highlighted how devs were working on fixing the Widevine L1 issues on the Reno 10x Zoom.
And now, Oppo Care on Twitter has acknowledged that they’re working on fixing the Widevine L1 to L3 downgrade on the Oppo Find X2:
This comes following a bunch of reports from frustrated users regarding the downgraded Widevine certification. After all, being forced to watch content in 480p on a device with a QHD+ display resolution is mortifying.
It is unclear why so many devices are mysteriously getting struck with Widevine issues at once lately, but we are hopeful that some OEM will finally take the initiative to provide an explanation.
For now, there is a possible solution at hand that may help with the downgraded Widevine issue on the Oppo Find X2 and the Oppo Find X2 Pro.
It comes in the form an APK that can be downloaded and installed via this link. The user that shared it has the following to say about it:
It appears that Oppo has stowed away a magic APK that immediately makes the Widevine L3 woes disappear upon installation. However, it requires you to pester support as they allegedly aren’t the quickest responders.
But thanks to the above user, anyone, or at least the Find X2 and Find X2 Pro users can download and use the APK file to fix Widevine. If it doesn’t work, then we are afraid you’ll have to contact Oppo support.
